1st place · Sustainable Designer of the Year

Jesselynn Desmond

A Sedona resident, Jesselynn won for two striking reinventions. She transformed her only heirloom from her grandmother, a tablecloth, into a decadent, French couture-inspired design. For her second look, she turned 13 men's diabetic socks into a second-skin, high-waisted bodycon skirt.

Prize: $1,000 in cash and $4,000 in credits for FABRIC, the Tempe fashion incubator. Phoenix Fashion Week founder Brian Hill also gave her tickets to the November 21 Phoenix Fashion Week event.

2nd place

Inok Alrutz

Inok runs ReFab Revolution, an upcycling boutique and creative workshop space in Flagstaff that carries the same spirit of resourcefulness beyond the runway. She plans to share her method for turning a men's flannel shirt into a dress with other mothers across the country.

Prize: FABRIC was so impressed that it extended an additional $4,000 scholarship to her. FABRIC specializes in online courses, mentorship and hardware to support small-scale fashion manufacturing.

3rd place

Hollie Laban

Hollie, of the Hopi and Tewa Nations, made two runway pieces that combined custom-printed Hopi fabric, flowers from her brother's wedding and a curtain, weaving cultural expression and personal history into her designs.

Prize: A $750 cash prize from an anonymous donor, given after the Fashion Show.

The Sustainable Fashion Design Award

$4,000 in courses and mentorship from the FABRIC Incubator in Tempe, plus a $1,000 cash award from Fashion Lab Sedona. FABRIC helps designers develop clothing lines through courses, mentorship and access to equipment for small-batch manufacturing.
